Starting April 8, goods purchased online from outside China will be subject to a 17 percent value-added tax and (if applicable) a consumption tax. The change is designed to level the playing field, since goods purchased via other channels have been subject to those taxes. Among the product categories expected to cost more as a result include: food, health care products and low-priced cosmetics.
