Over the past three years, incentives provided by the EU Rural Development Program let to an increase in plantings of organic almond and walnut orchards in Bulgaria. In 2013, organic walnut almond and hazelnut orchards reached 8946 hectares, compared to 5981 hectares in 2012, up 34 percent. Approximately 71 percent of Bulgaria’s almond orchards are organic. Meanwhile, Bulgaria is a net importer of almonds.
