In the first report to examine the organic market in Canada since national regulations were put into place in 2009 show that the market there is worth $3.7 billion, and a majority (58 percent) of Canadians buy organic products each week. Compiled by the Canada Organic Trade Association (COTA), the Canada’s Organic Market report found that mainstream retail sale sof organic food and beverages nearly tripled since 2006, and now represent 1.6 percent of of the market nationally. In a related report, The BC Organic Market Growth, Trends & Opportunities, 2013, COTA found that although the province represents 13% of the Canadian population, British Columbia accounts for 22% of Canada's organic food and beverage sales (over $662 million in 2012). Furthermore, 66 percent of British Columbians buy organic groceries on a weekly basis, making BC the province with the most weekly organic grocery purchasers per capita in the country.
