USDA Agricultural Trade Office Shanghai staff attended the Biofach Organic Trade Show in Shanghai, and reported that the number of Chinese organic producers has not expanded in the past year due to the implementation of stricter organic standards. Meanwhile, the companies that did not go out of business are getting used to the new standards. In addition, importers are working with suppliers from the United States to modify labeling to avoid making organic claims on packaging. They also reported importers are “are hoping that U.S. and Chinese 3rd party certifiers can reach agreement to allow U.S. certifiers to issue Chinese organic certification in the future for American organic products.”
