Sales of imported foods grew 14 percent last year, and 86.7 percent of Chinese urban families have bought imported foods at least once, according to Kantar Worldpanel data. Among the categories of interest are imported milk powder; Chinese shoppers spent 20.92 billion yuan on it in 2014. Liquid milk imports had a sales growth of 43.6 percent to reach 2.42 billion yuan in 2014 with a penetration rate of 13 percent. Snacks (14.52 billion yuan) and nutritious foods (14.05 billion yuan) were the next largest categories. The two fastest growing channels for buying imported foods are ‘overseas purchasing’ and ‘online shopping.’
