Over 150 farms in the German state of Lower Saxony are being investigated for systematically violating the rules for free-range egg production through overcrowding the birds. The investigation began in 2011, and came to light during a change of government. In addition, about 50 farms elsewhere in Germany are also under investigation. Some of the farms in the investigations are organic farms.
