A survey by organic farming advocates Fördergemeinschaft Ökologischer Landbau Berlin-Brandenburg (FÖL) showed organic turnover in the Berlin-Brandenburg region was over 350 million euros in 22014, up 8 percent. That figure includes direct sales, subscription services, and organic retailers. Supermarkets are driving growth, with 10 more supermarkets in the region, and 18 more planned for 2015. Meanwhile, Berlin’s school lunches include at least 15 percent organic ingredients, and often average 40 percent as caterers vying for the business increase beyond the minimum requirements. As many as 88,000 daily school lunches are provided by 22 suppliers, with the seven largest suppliers covering 80 percent of the market. The next frontier for meals is seen as offering locally produced ingredients in addition to the organic ingredients.
