Although only 1.3 percent of farmland in Ireland is certified as organic, Ireland’s Food Harvest 2020 strategy calls for 5 percent of land to be organic by 2020. Doing so would offer more opportunities for farms, particularly small farms and red meat producers. In 2012 there were 981 organic cattle farms (non-dairy) and 41,381 organic cattle (non-dairy) in Ireland, up 19 percent for cattle farms and 38 in cattle numbers since 2007.
