During the first five months of 2014, sales of organic packaged foods were up 17 percent in large supermarket chains, according to data from ISMEA / Gfk Eurisko. Pasta, rice and bread substitutes has been a particularly strong category. In that same time, total food purchases decreased 1.4 percent. The growth of organic packaged food sales is attributed to a larger number of organic products available, a better assortment, availability in more stores, including private label products in discounters, and new product lines, especially products made with buckwheat, kamut and emmer. Meanwhile, the Coop house brand, Vivi Verde, which includes more than 400 organic and sustainable products, has seen sales grow 12 percent in 2013, and 70 percent growth from 2009 to 2013. When sales form April 2013 are compared with April 2014, sale of organic pasta are up 55 percent, organic milk is up 6 percent, organic egg sales are up 6 percent, and organic canned tomato sales rose 11 percent.
