New Zealand passed laws which will require country of origin labeling on fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, seafood and meat, including cured pork products. The regulations will come into force 18 months after they are signed, with a six month transition period for fresh foods and two years for frozen foods.

The state of Jharkhand in India intends to sign a memorandum of understanding with consumer goods company Patanjali Ayurved for marketing organic farm products of the state. The state government plans to set up organic production clusters in all 24 of its districts.

Households used 5.2 percent less organic vegetables in the first three quarters of 2018, compared to the same time in 2017. Domestic organic carrot production uses more organic farmland than any other vegetable crop. Due to lower yields and weather-related storage issues, domestic organic carrots will be sold out by the end of the year. Meanwhile, organic potatoes comprise 3.6 of German potato acreage. Heat stress is also affecting potato storage, with anticipated loss of 30 percent of the crop.

Woolworths Organic Fund will offer AU$30 million for interest-free loans to organic farms for land, facilities, and equipment. Farmers can also use the loans to convert to organic production. Demand for organic fruits and vegetables is growing about 20 percent annually. The market for organic products in Australia is estimated at AU$2.4 billion.

Carrefour Polska, the Polish Chamber of Organic Food, Warsaw University of Life Sciences and the EKOŁAN Association will work together to develop the organic food market. Although only about 500,000 hectares are used for growing organic food in Poland, organic food sales remain high with demand met by imports. The coalition plans to simplify and facilitate the certification process.

In simulated supermarket shopping scenarios online, people who chose organic products were more likely to buy a product if it was certified organic, locally sourced and in sustainable  packaging, with local having the largest bearing on the choice, says Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA) PhD candidate Maria Massey. In addition, people buy organic products based on perceived health and environmental benefits, but were not clear on exactly what makes a product organic.

Shoppers in Spain spend over €5 million per day on organic food.  In 2017, organic food sales reached €1.962 billion, up 16.4 percent from 2016, and nearly double the €1 billion of 2013.Vegetables, fruit and cereals are the most popular categories, with meat and animal-based dairy next. Oil and wine—the most common exports— represent about five percent of domestic sales of organic products. Shoppers under age 25 are the main purchasers of organic products in Spain.

New regulations from the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) will put a stop to ‘frivolous’ terms in food advertising. Once the regulations are implemented,  only claims that are based on available scientific information and international best practices will be allowed; eliminating the use of terms such as natural, fresh, traditional, best, and others unless the foods meet certain standards. If these terms or synonyms are included in brand names, a disclaimer must be included that indicates the term is a brand name only and does not represent the product’s true nature.

According to the Prairie Organic Grain Initiative, organic sales in Canada grew an average of 8.4 percent annually from 2012 to 2017, but organic sales in Alberta averaged at 10.2 percent during that time period. Alberta’s market was worth CN$676 million in 2017, part of Canada’s CN$4.2 billion market (excluding alcohol sales). Meanwhile, he percent of people buying organic in Alberta at that time dropped from 82 percent to 76 percent.

USDA’s report on the food service market in Guatemala says healthy, nutritious, and organic products are in demand as many restaurants and hotels are trying to adapt their menus to satisfy the demand of their high-end consumers. Most new hotels and restaurants are located in Guatemala City, with a population of five million.

In street interviews at Paris’ Aligre market in the 12th arrondissement, shoppers talk about their preferences for high-quality, local and organic products. Organic food consumption in France was up 17 percent in 2017, with 59 percent of French people regularly eating organic fruits and vegetables. Sixty percent of organic fruit sold in France is imported.

Following a detailed review, the Soil Association has updated its organic standards, and changes will become effective for Soil Association licensees in April 2019. The changes were made to make sure the standards are “straightforward, transparent and clear as possible” for licensees to use and for the public to understand.

In the first half of 2018, 136 new organic supermarkets and food shops opened in France, and 46 natural food stores closed. Biocoop leads the way with 37 new retail outlets. In addition, Carrefour and Leclerc supermarkets are expanding their organic private label offerings. With 1.7 million hectares dedicated to organic production, France is second to Germany in the organic sector in Europe.

Instead of five logos, changes to Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS) logos will leave three logos for use. Previously, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) logos differentiated 1) General JAS for the standardization of products, 2) organic production, 3) products with distinguishable qualities or features (such as aged ham, aged sausage, aged bacon, locally bred free-range chicken, and hand-stretched dried noodle), 4) production method information, and 5) distribution conditions (such as temperature control). The organic JAS logo will add the term “Organic” to the top of the existing logo. Meanwhile, a new logo replaces 3-5 above into a single logo that depicts Mt. Fuji and a setting sun. The new logo includes a space to indicate which specification, such as ‘sustainable aquaculture,’ applies.

The domestic market for organic foods in India is expected to reach US$ 1.7 billion by 2020, approximately triple its current value at US$559 million. Organic packaged foods, in particular, are expected to boost organic sales. Most of the market is supplied by over 200 small businesses, with Organic India holding the largest market share at 9 percent.

Chile’s organic food exports to the European Union from January to August 2018 exceeded its exports for all of 2017.  An equivalency agreement between the EU and Chile came into force in 2018.
