The latest report form the Textile Exchange, Farm & Fiber Report 2011-12, highlights not only organic cotton production but also some of the need for quality non-GMO seed and other issues facing organic producers. In 2011-2012, India produced 74 percent of the world’s organic cotton, and retained its number one position yet again. Despite an 8 percent drop in production worldwide, Nicaragua showed a 190 percent increase in production and Tanzania’s production grew 153 percent. Figures from Syria, consistently one of the world’s top three organic cotton producers, were not available due to national unrest.
