The scientific panel appointed by India’s Supreme Court has called for a stop to GMO testing, a decade-long moratorium on field trials of Bt food crops, and an assessment of the need for GMO crops, among other criteria. The panel’s recommendations are not binding, and the court has not yet held a hearing on the report or issued any directives to the government concerning a ban. Meanwhile, India’s Parliament is considering establishing a Biotechnology Regulatory Authority to serve as a watchdog.
