Results of a survey done on behalf of Germany’s Federal Ministry of Consumer Protection show that more and more young people are looking specifically for organic food when they shop. The number of shoppers under age 30 who frequently buy organic increased up 9 percentage points from 2011 to 23 percent in 2012. Meanwhile, the percent of older respondents (between 50-59) who only or often purchase organic products has fallen from 26 percent to 19 percent. Overall, the percent of the population that frequently or exclusively chooses organic food remained constant at 22 percent. Support for regional farms and the region of origin was the primary reason for choosing organic, followed by animal welfare and pollution. Fruits and vegetables are the most frequent purchases, followed by eggs, and then potatoes. Although people buy most often from their usual places to shop (supermarkets, discounters, bakers and weekly markets), buying directly from producers is increasingly popular.
