The domestic market for organic food in India is expected to reach US 1 billion by 2015, propelled in part by increasing awareness of the dangers of pesticide residues in foods and increased disposable income. A new book “Organic Food Marketing in Urban Centres of India” by Nina Osswald and Manoj K. Menon shows that Bangalore has the highest sales and the greatest number of organic retail outlets per 100,000 people. Most organic products are sold through specialty stores or modern supermarkets, and online retail and home delivery sales are growing fast. Fresh organic fruits and vegetables are less readily available than dry groceries, since fresh products are riskier for grocers. Farmers, meanwhile, often lack access to the market.
